Lady Bengals avenge 2006 loss to Quince Orchard

Led by Sammy Allen's 4 goals, the Lady Bengals defeated traditional MoCo lax powerhouse Quince Orchard by a 12-10 score. Twice Blake jumped out to good leads, only to see the Lady Cougars gamely rally, but fall short.

Other scorers for Blake were Justine Allen (3), Molly Wannen (2), Nicky Wannen (2), and Ashley Martin (1).
Blake 4, Wheaton 3 (at Blake)

Blake is 2-0 and off to a 2-0 start for the second straight year. Blake has won 22 of it last 30 games.

The game marked the 56th game as head co-coaches for Steve Murfin and Jon Green to tie the record of Jim Flaikas for most games as head coach of the Blake Baseball team.

Blake RHP Taylor Schallhorn (Sr) struck out 12 and walked 0 while scattering 5 hits in his very first varsity pitching performance. He retired the first 10 batters of his varsity career in order, 6 on strikeouts.

Schallhorn went the distance and drove in the winning run with a hard smash off the glove of Wheaton SS Elijah Davis to score Courtesy Runner Joey Gratton (So) with the winning run in the bottom of the 7th.

Gratton was running for Catcher RJ Hackley who doubled off the fence on a 2-2 pitch, just missing a game-winning HR by two feet, to score Taylor Miller (Fr, 2b) who was hit by a pitch to open the seventh inning.

Wheaton took the lead 3-2 with 3 runs in the 4th after one out. The key blow was a 2-run single down the 3b line by Pinch Hitter Justin Ellis that plated Carlos Pedroze and Elijah Davis.
Blake scored single runs in the second and third inning for a 2-0 lead.

Bengal Alum Update!

Blake Baseball Friend Joe Udwari reports that Alex is doing well in his senior season at Belmont Abbey:

"The Abbey is doing well (21-12 overall and second in the conference), as is Alex. Thus far he's broken the Abbey career records for home runs (old record 29/Alex's new record 34),doubles(55/58), RBIs (166/176), and hits (264/266), and our season is only half over and he hasn't even gotten 'hot' yet. He's hitting .360 through Wednesday, and so far has tied his personal best of 10 home runs in a season. Hopefully he'll shatter that and also set a few more school records."

Also, Alex was interviewed by the Baltimore Orioles a few weeks ago and they have been watching him.

The Blake Bengals Baseball Family is proud of Alex' achievements and wish him well for continued success in his final season at Belmont Abbey.

Schrader, Tarner and Schallhorn collect post-season awards

Matt Schrader and Zack Tarner continued to clean up the post-season awards as they were voted to the Montgomery County Coach's 4A East All-Star team and 3b and Pitcher respectively. But adding to the group was a newcomer, Blake Junior Second baseman, Taylor Schallhorn.

Tarner had the most votes at Pitcher being named on every ballot cast by the 4A East coaches. Schrader was named on all but one ballot by the coaches for 3b and was voted to the team for the second consecutive year. Schallhorn was awarded the 1st team Utility Player position on the All-Star team as the most versatile player of those receiving votes at the infield positions. Schallhorn batted .446 and led the team with 25 RBI and set a record with 17 stolen bases. He was second in the county overall with the 17 steals. It is the first post season award for Schallhorn as a Bengal.

"With Matt and Zack's performance this year, post-season honors are expected. For Taylor to be recognized by the coach's is a tribute to his hard off-season work and the great year he had for us. It is also a tribute to our team as the coach's recognized that it wasn't just a couple of players that made us winners. It was a team effort," said Blake coach Steve Murfin.
